I love listening to my mom talk about growing up in a small village in Lebanon. By the time she was 18, she met my dad, a Lebanese American who brought her to the USA where I was born. My mom only made it to second grade back in the tiny Lebanese village which turned her into a big advocate for my sister and I to graduate from college.
Fotokids is a non-profit organization working to break the cycle of poverty for at-risk children in Guatemala and among children of farmworkers in the Central Valley of California. Serving more than a thousand children affected by poverty and violence, Fotokids gives them a chance to dream and build a better life by using photography, graphic design, media technology and visual arts training as tools for self-expression, creativity, leadership and future employment.
I founded Fotokids 28 years ago after leaving my career as a Reuters news agency’s combat staff photographer in Central America. Originally, the program started with six kids from Guatemala City’s vast garbage dump. I’m told that finding you would be like finding the piece of my heart that I never knew was missing; Where are you? I’m only 23 years old but I feel like I’ve been on a lifelong mission trying to find you.
There once was a girl talking to two guys on Tinder; they were both named Max. She liked one more than the other and when he sent her a message: “Drink this Thursday?” In her nonchalant, playing-it-cool reply, she agreed, ending up on a date with the wrong Max.
I grew up in the South of France, and for all the hype about how liberated French women are, men there were considered worthier by virtue of their gender alone. Men would sit at the dinner table exuding authority, while women would serve them food. Men would talk, women would listen. Teenagers would routinely slut shame their dates, and it was believed that occasionally slapping your wife around “didn’t hurt anyone.”
My father was a salesman. He would travel all year long to sell the titanic printing machines formerly used in the packaging industry. He was smart, he would dress to impress with three-piece suits, impeccable nails and the scent of « Pour un Homme » from Caron. My mother, like many at that time, married very young as a means to escape her own family.
My name is Daniela Rea and I have two daughters, Naira and Emilia, aged 5 and 2 years-old. Until I became their mothers, I was a woman living in a world built by and for men. A woman who was used to carving a space for herself in a patriarchal world, to compete rather than to help, to legitimate what was expected of me, rather than figuring out who I was and how I could best contribute to my community. Giving birth to my daughters made me reflect about what it means to be a woman.
In the old church building, a very confident Grace stood at the front of the room surrounded by young girls from her community. She had just finished giving her talk about her personal journey from child prostitute to community builder and motivational speaker.
Fourteen. That’s how old I was when the Lord’s Resistance Army raided my home village in Eastern Uganda. As a teenager, I was quickly cast aside for sexual exploitation by the LRA Commanders in charge of triage. They wanted virgins, the younger the girl, the better. I narrowly escaped them by following a crowd, a mass movement of bodies that got itself wrapped in a cloud of dust, and was later able to join my family.
I grew up in Denmark with what most Danes would refer to as an afro. It wasn’t an afro, just curly hair. But even in our ultra-globalized world, the nuances of what constitutes race and origin still elude many of us. Identity in a black and white world means that brown girls like me are often not represented. Growing-up, I overcompensated for being different (not blond, not white) and often straightened my hair.
I was arrested many times. Detained for a strand of hair escaping from my hijab, or because I sat next to a boy or went to a student party. They tried to arrest me once (and my mum!) as we celebrated a football victory. This was before I even announced my calling as a pop singer.
It is virtually impossible for journalists to enter Bahrain, they can’t sneak in illegally, like some do in Syria, because Bahrain is an island, one located between Saudi Arabia and Iran.
My mother cried when I told her but said nothing and life went on as normal. I live in Area 24, a bustling neighborhood in Lilongwe, Malawi’s capital. I’ve graduated in hospitality business and I make a living as a health worker. I was a young woman among others until the day my photo ran on front page of the Malawi Daily Times, the country’s largest newspaper.
I grew up in a small village in Western Kenya in what I believed was a liberal and progressive family. I saw men supporting women; in fact, my father raised my elder sisters and me. Everyone received equal education, and we all went to school.

When Vedica my thirteen years old daughter insisted that we go to the India Gate to light a candle in honour of the late Nirbhaya, the young victim of the Delhi gang rape, I wasn’t too keen on it.The area remains a high-security zone after the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks and I didn’t think a candle would do much good, anyway. “Why don’t you do something meaningful for her cause?”, I remember telling her...I realized then that Vedica and her friends hadn’t forgotten Nirbhaya at all, on the contrary, violence against women was a main subject of conversation for them and they were genuinely concerned for their safety.
"I am 20 now, but when the acid attack happened, I was only 18. The boy was from the next town over where my maternal grandmother lives and I used to visit her frequently. That day, he saw me and started following and verbally harassing me all the way back to my house. I tried to avoid him, then repeatedly pleaded for him to leave me alone, to no effect."
India ranks as the worst country on earth to be a woman or even a girl. I grew up here but was lucky to be shielded from gender violence by my family. Throughout childhood, I was unaware of the extent to which all manners of domestic violence affects people who are part of our daily lives. In 2014, the United Nations described violence against women in India as a systematic crime that stretches “from the womb to the tomb.” Discrimination cuts across all sectors of society and its root causes cannot be reduced to poverty alone. Instead, the entire nation is still deeply influenced by social and cultural barriers that prevent us from addressing the abuses that are taking place in our own backyards.
At best, if they ever get punished, perpetrators will be released from prison after a few years. Survivors, however, will remain trapped inside their own burnt skin for the rest of their lives.

If the mainstream media has shaped your representation of women of Muslim heritage, you may imagine our lives as a grim bucket list from hell: honor killings, acid attacks, suicide bombings, forced marriages, FGM, hijabs... and the ever-growing risk of radicalization. But conservative men claiming to speak on our behalf, or bigots eager to use our hardships to further their own divisive agenda, often are the one entitled to discuss these issues. In doing so, they specifically discard anyone else’s input, let alone that of young women (who also happen to be the primary targets).

I learned about the March for Life through my friend photographer Felipe Jacome. He told me how in October 2013, 70 women from 7 different indigenous tribes of the Ecuadorian Amazon embarked on a 250-km march to the country’s capital.
