Flashy headlines but little content as the press rarely investigates the nature of these violent acts. Over the course of almost a year, the French reporter Laurène Daycard have been looking back on the life of one of the 123 women that disappeared in 2016. By telling Géraldine Sohier’s story, killed on October 12, 2016 by her ex-husband, Laurène Daycard wanted to give a face and a voice to the many victims of femicide in France.

Once a child bride, Ruvimbo decided to take a stand against the Zimbabwean Constitution and illegalise child marriages in Zimbabwe. Now, Ruvimbo is the founder of the Topodzi Foundation Trust that aims to eradicate child marriages forever and uplift Women's Rights.

When Vedica my thirteen years old daughter insisted that we go to the India Gate to light a candle in honour of the late Nirbhaya, the young victim of the Delhi gang rape, I wasn’t too keen on it.The area remains a high-security zone after the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks and I didn’t think a candle would do much good, anyway. “Why don’t you do something meaningful for her cause?”, I remember telling her...I realized then that Vedica and her friends hadn’t forgotten Nirbhaya at all, on the contrary, violence against women was a main subject of conversation for them and they were genuinely concerned for their safety.

India ranks as the worst country on earth to be a woman or even a girl. I grew up here but was lucky to be shielded from gender violence by my family. Throughout childhood, I was unaware of the extent to which all manners of domestic violence affects people who are part of our daily lives. In 2014, the United Nations described violence against women in India as a systematic crime that stretches “from the womb to the tomb.” Discrimination cuts across all sectors of society and its root causes cannot be reduced to poverty alone. Instead, the entire nation is still deeply influenced by social and cultural barriers that prevent us from addressing the abuses that are taking place in our own backyards.

CHIME Through the Years: “Amazónicas: Guardians of Life” by Charles Gay

I learned about the March for Life through my friend photographer Felipe Jacome.   He told me how in October 2013, 70 women from 7 different indigenous tribes of the Ecuadorian Amazon embarked on a 250-km march to the country’s capital. They walked, babies in arms and children at their sides to ask the central government to spare their habitat from a worldwide auction sale that would sell parts of their ancestral lands to oil companies.  The march was totally disregarded by the global and national media, the public only found out about their initiative when they reached Quito, a couple of weeks later.
